There are skeletons in anyone’s closet, and Presidents are no different. Furthermore, underwhelming Presidents are nothing new. Warren G. Harding sounded like an idiot, and Andrew Johnson seemed like a straight-up piece of shit. Living in a time where the reverence for President of the US is shaky at best, it’s nice to think back on the heroes that built this country.
Yes, Washington lived in a time where people like him enslaved other people that weren’t like him, misogyny was the norm, and it wasn’t unusual for a Cherry Tree to take the brunt of a hatchet. But there was undeniable good and genuine heroism in Washington. By all accounts, he took the responsibility of how he conducted himself and the effect it had on his constituents and their families, very seriously.
So today I raise a glass to George, the O.G. POTUS.
